Well, after last weekends wash outs it was nice to be able to get back out to the track. Again the weather looked like it could cause some problems so we waited until the last second before we decided where to go.
On Saturday night they had the Cowtown Sprints at Kennedale Speedway Park so we headed over there. When we got there it had just started to rain some but stopped as fast as it started and that was all the rain for the night. We were surprised that the car count was so low but we were still happy to race.
We completely missed our set up in our heat race. We started 5th, inside 3rd row. The car was just to tight and we ended up finishing 4th. That put us outside row 2 for the feature. The track was still tight but had some big ruts at both ends so we made a few changes to run the bottom of the track to stay out of the ruts.
At the drop of the green flag we took off and the car was still a little tight but OK. We managed to move up to 3rd after a few laps but buy then the leaders had checked out and we had no way to run them down with out a caution. So we finished third.
With the weather still looking good we decided to try for 2 nights in a row and headed to Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore for a race with the ASCS Gulf South Region. And again just before we got to the track we ran into rain but it stopped just before we arrived.
This track is a large high banked 1/2 mile with red dirt and great lighting. This was our first time to race there so we did not know what to expect. We had about 36 sprint cars in the field so we were hoping to get a good draw and we did. We drew # 7 starting us out side front row in the 3rd heat. The track was wet, heavy & rough.
We headed out for hot laps and the car was very good so we just cleaned it up and waited for our heat race. At the start of our heat race we took off and cleared the pole sitter coming out of turn 2 and just tried to run some smooth laps and stay out of the ruts and we ended up taking the checkers with straightaway lead over second place as the car was nice and fast.
That put us in the draw for the top 8 starting spots and of course we drew 8 of 8 so we started the feature out side row 4. At the drop of the flag I was able to get to the bottom of the track as we had set up the car to run there. Then in the middle of turn two I was hit by another car in the left rear wheel and kick rail. It destroyed my wheel & tire but I was able to drive it to the work area and my crew was able to change it fast and get back on the track before the restart. Now I had to start 24th at the back of the field.
When the flap dropped I took off working the bottom of the track and made it up to about 15Th when we had red flag as our good friend Skip Wilson had turned over in turn 2. I was glad to see Skip was fine. At that time I noticed that I now had a flat FL tire and bent rim so back to the work area and the crew put on a new tire and wheel again. So now we had to start from the back again.
At the drop of the flag we took off again and I was still very fast and was able to work my way from the back to 10th when I entered turn 1 to fast and spun out the car. So the yellow came out for me and it was back to the rear 1 more time with about 10 laps of our 25 left
When the green flag flew again we were still very fast and we were able to come from last all the way up to 10th before the checkered flew and the race was over. It was now 2:00 AM and we all had a great time but were very tired.
Stay tuned for the announcement coming soon about the next Palm Harbor Homes track promotion, to replace the rained out effort from a few weeks ago.
Thanks again to all our friends, fans & sponsors that support us and this weekend we will be at another track we have never raced at in Abilene TX.
